The Book of Palms
On 15 December 1868, Carl Friedrich Philipp von Martius (1794–1868), Professor of Botany at the University of Munich and director of the Royal Botanic Garden, was carried to his grave in a coffin covered with fresh palm leaves. These were a reference to his groundbreaking Historia naturalis palmarum: opus tripartitum (Natural History of Palms: a work in three volumes), published between 1823–1853. At the time, this encyclopedic treasury contained the sum of human knowledge on the topic, and included 240 exquisite chromolithographic illustrations, including landscape views of palm habitats and botanical dissections. This epic folio was based on Martius's expedition to Brazil and Peru with zoologist Johann Baptist von Spix, sponsored by King Maximilian I of Bavaria, to investigate natural history and tribal Indians. From 1817 to 1820 the pair travelled over 2,250 km (1,400 miles) throughout the Amazon Basin, the most species-rich palm region in the world, collecting and sketching specimens. On their return both men were awarded knighthoods and lifetime pensions. In his epic work, Martius outlined the modern classification of palm, produced the first maps of palm biogeography, described all the palms of Brazil, and collated the sum of all known genera of the palm family. For apart from his own collection of specimens and notes, Martius also wrote about the findings of others. Martius's folio is unusual in its inclusion of cross-sectioned diagrams, conveying the architecture of these mighty trees, which central Europeans would have found hard to imagine accurately. Equally remarkable are the color landscapes showing various palms – often standing alone – which have a simple and elegant beauty. This famous work is an unrivaled landmark in botanic illustration and taxonomy.

Ve své první a nejradikálnější knize, nazvané jednoduše Díla, se Édouard Levé (1965-2007) představuje jako podvratný eklektik, teoretický kutil a obsedantní vynálezce takřka rousselovského formátu.
Je soupis 533 nerealizovaných - a často nerealizovatelných - děl literaturou, nebo konceptuálním dílem eo ipso? Vzniká umělecké dílo svou fyzickou realizací, nebo již ve chvíli, kdy je mentálně počato - pouhým nápadem? Nekomentovaný Levého soupis nápadů nenabízí mnoho odpovědí. Jeho "díla" jsou často tajemná a znepokojivá, leckdy absurdní, občas filozofující, sem tam humorná a někdy svéhlavě, autoritativně nesmyslná.
Jakkoli je Édouard Levé jako vizuální umělec znám především jako fotograf, pohybuje se v Dílech napříč uměleckými sférami, od zvukového umění, videa a experimentálního filmu přes performance až po monumentální instalace. Dokáže být stejně posedlý absurditou jazyka jako absurditou architektury, zajímá ho náhoda, nevědomost nebo vědomé uvedení v omyl, podoby duplicity i percepční nehody. Bujarou smršť zapsaných nápadů lze chápat jako gesto zdrženlivosti, ale i jako nárokování si bezmezné tvůrčí svobody, nespoutané produkčními omezeními. Své potenciální celoživotní dílo poskytuje Édouard Levé svázané v útlé knize. Jako provokaci, výzvu, reakci i inspiraci.

Balkán alebo metafora
Po úspešnom profile Emira Kusturicu sa autorka Jana Dudková rozhodla potvrdiť svoje odborné zameranie na balkánske kinematografie ďalšou publikáciou, vymedzenou predovšetkým kontextom srbského filmu 90. rokov. V podrobných interpretáciách piatich filmov (Rany, Underground, Pekné dediny pekne horia, Čierna mačka, biely kocúr, Sud prachu) objasňuje podvedomé i vedomé snahy o vymanenie súčasného obrazu Balkánu zo zajatia tradičných stereotypov a predsudkov v jeho reflexii. Kľúčovým pozadím analýz všetkých spomínaných filmov sa v jej texte stala problematizácia pojmu „balkanizmus“, ktorý bol v polovici 90. rokov navrhnutý podľa vzoru „orientalizmu“ literárneho kritika Edwarda Saida. Päť filmov, ktoré si v Srbsku i v zahraničí diváci zvykli vnímať ako „typicky“ balkánske, autorka prezentuje ako potenciálne podvratné a ukazuje tak aj nové možnosti, ako je z Balkánu možné urobiť metaforu ľudského životného údelu, ale najmä ľudského myslenia a vnímania.

Stickers are an independent, creative form of expression and an integral part of contemporary street art and visual culture. Favoured amongst street artists, graphic designers, illustrators and typographers, they have become a common phenomenon throughout cities all over the world. Inexpensive and easy to produce, stickers often aid in effective guerrilla advertising campaigns or individuals making their mark on their urban landscape. Stickers 2 presents over 150 international artists who are expressing themselves through this versatile medium. Stickers are created from various materials and techniques by hand, photocopies and posters that are wheat-pasted to walls. Motifs vary from quick sketches and figures to complex designs and artworks that are often perceived as logos and tags, widely repeated and distributed through a practice called sticker bombing. The messages stickers spread are ephemeral, subversive and humorous and the simple and quick means of production lends to their flexible and spontaneous nature. Stickers 2 is a collection of over 700 stunning examples of contemporary sticker designs from around the world, spanning cities and rural areas across the USA, Brazil, Australia, Singapore and Europe.
