Baron George Hoyningen-Huene (1900–1968) worked during the golden age of couture fashion and Hollywood cinema. Born in St Petersburg, his wealthy family had to flee their home during the Russian Revolution in1917. Hoyningen-Huene spent time in England before moving to Paris, where he was employed to create photographs for Vogue and Vanity Fair, and rapidly established himself as a visual innovator, fusing elements of neoclassicism and surrealism to create chic, arresting images. In 1935, Huene joined Harper’s Bazaar, where he remained a contributor until 1946, following which he settled in California and embarked on a second career as a color coordinator for Hollywood movies.
Supported by an international exhibition opening at Chanel Nexus Hall in Tokyo, this in-depth and richly illustrated book combines elegant design and production values with rigorous new research and scholarship, and includes previously unpublished work and correspondence. In eight chapters, each supported by texts by writers from the worlds of fashion, cinema, and photography, and featuring names and faces that have defined our view of style, glamor, and grace in the twentieth century, this volume reminds us of Hoyningen-Huene’s position among the greats of photography.

The world is full of design companies, but none of them are like North. Formed in 1995 by Sean Perkins, the studio has always followed a highly individualistic path. This individualism manifests itself in many ways: most notably in the absence of a densely populated studio website; there are no hyperactive social media feeds; even the studio’s name, derived from Perkins’ origins in the unmetropolitan north of England, stands for frill-free, plain speaking, visual directness. It’s almost as if North is a well-kept secret. Yet the group has a devoted worldwide following, and attracts myriad clients keen to hire them for their ability to produce memorable and carefully engineered visual identities.
North’s work is the product of sharp-brained research, high-end craft and precise visual expression. Escher

Maurits Cornelis Escher was born in 1898 in the Netherlands and died there in 1972. In 1922 he first visited Italy (Tuscany, Umbria and Liguria) and in 1923 arrived in Rome, where he lived for twelve years, until 1935. The Roman period had a strong influence on all his later work, which saw him prolific in the production of lithographs and etchings especially of landscapes, views, architecture and views of that ancient and Baroque Rome that he loved to investigate in its most intimate dimension, that of the night, by the dim light of a lantern. Restless, reserved and undoubtedly brilliant, Escher in his famous engravings and lithographs created a unique, imaginative, impossible world where art, mathematics, science, physics and design converge.
Published on the exhibition in Rome, the volume gathers over 300 works, including new acquisitions and many of his most notable pieces that have made him famous all over the world, documenting the story of the Dutch artist's genius with the most iconic works of his production such as Hand with Reflecting Sphere (1935), Bond of Union (1956), Metamorphosis II (1939), Day and Night (1938) and the Emblemata series, which belong to the common imagination referable to the great artist. The book also features the complete series of 12 Roman Nocturnes produced in 1934. An artist discovered relatively recently, Escher is loved by those who know art, but also by those who are passionate about mathematics, geometry, science, design, and graphics. A wide range of themes converge in his works, and for this reason in the panorama of art history he represents a uniqueness.

Publikace věnovaná malíři a pedagogovi Janu Smetanovi (1918–1998), známému především v souvislosti se Skupinou 42. Smetanova další, nepoměrně rozsáhlejší tvorba dosud čekala na komplexní zhodnocení. V jednotlivých partiturách je naznačeno, že lze pro snadnější provedení nástroje vynechat (senza) nebo jejich part přebírá klavír (ossia). Klavírní doprovod je mnohdy velice osobitý, harmonická složka je plná moderních spojů, zahuštěných či mimotonálních akordů, ale hudba je zcela tonální, má vztah k předem dané tónině, tedy využívá především tóny patřící dané stupnici (C dur, E dur, Es dur). Cyklus na texty známých dětských říkanek je v pěvecké melodické lince zcela tonální. Výjimečně se objeví chromatický postup (Houpala se s kočkou kočka, Paci, paci, pacičky) nebo křížkem zvýšený, alterovaný tón (Takhle jedou páni). Klavírní doprovod je však pro zpěv v těchto případech intonační oporou. Opačně tomu může být v písni Kyblíček a lopatička. Její melodika je prostá, v rozsahu kvinty (pěti tónů), především stupnicovitá. Doprovod ve formě polky však obsahuje řadu mimotonálních tónů, takže zpěvák musí svou melodiku důkladně znát, ale současně prožít humorný moderní doprovod zcela přirozeně. V těchto aspektech je každá skladba cyklu skutečně malým uměleckým dílem. Vydatnou pomůckou jsou pro každou píseň vytvořené nahrávky doprovodů (QR kódy). Některé písně jsou melodicky prosté, vycházejí jen z jediného tónu (Bumtarata na ta vrata), některé jsou v rozsahu prvních pěti tónů stupnice (Kyblíček a lopatička, Šiju boty, Paci, paci, pacičky, Mámo, táto, v komoře je myš, Kukačka a Kryštof, Kolo, kolo mlýnský), maximálním rozsahem je oktáva (Takhle jedou páni), tedy celá durová řada, stupnice kombinující melodiku stupnicovitých kroků s rozklady akordů. Cyklus skladeb Kryštůfkovy písničky vznikl spontánně pro všechny nadané malé zpěváky, jejich učitele a pro všechny ostatní, kteří zpěvem, aktivním prožitkem neopomíjejí hudební procesy ve výchově a zrání dětí.
