Pamatují Napoleona (II)
V dobách konzulátu a prvního císařství ve Francii se vyjímala na nebi umělecké imaginace Napoleonova hvězda. Obraz nového suveréna byl synonymem světla, štěstěny a úspěchu. Jeho vojenské porážky a ukončení vleklých válek vytvořily v letech 1814–1815 podmínky pro vznik souhvězdí „vítězů nad Napoleonem“, které poutalo obrazotvornost umělců i zámožných vrstev. Jedním z těch, kdo si chtěl pamatovat Napoleona (1769–1821), byl rakouský ministr zahraničí Klemens Wenzel Lothar von Metternich-Winneburg (1773–1859). Během svého života shromáždil cenné umělecké sbírky a memorabilie s vazbami na proslulé události a osobnosti. Vedle samotného francouzského císaře byl mezi nimi i francouzský ministr zahraničí Charles-Maurice de Talleyrand-Périgord (1754–1838) či sekretář Vídeňského kongresu Friedrich von Gentz (1764–1832). Artefakty spravované Národním památkovým ústavem vypovídají nejen o reáliích a vkusu své doby, ale spolu s osobnostmi, které připomínají, jsou autentickými svědky, kteří promlouvají v historické paměti jako ti, kteří pamatují Napoleona.
Druhý díl knihy Pamatují Napoleona navazuje na první svazek a je volným pokračováním knih Zrcadlo moci a Třináctá komnata Napoleonova, analyzujících formování obrazu Napoleona Bonaparta v umění a odraz napoleonské epochy ve fondech hradů a zámků České republiky. Kniha se vedle Napoleonovy (re)prezentace zaměřuje rovněž na další významné osobnosti Napoleonovy doby, které přitahovaly pozornost umělců v různých evropských zemích a zůstaly spjaty také s českým prostředím. Výzkum artefaktů v českých hradozámeckých fondech byl realizován komparativní metodou v kontextu kulturního dědictví uchovávaného v příslušných zahraničních paměťových institucích či ve vybraných privátních sbírkách. Recenzovaná monografie je výsledkem výzkumného úkolu podpořeného Ministerstvem kultury ČR.

Ylla (1911-55) devoted herself exclusively to animal portraiture at a time when no one had thought of only photographing animals. Driven by her symbiotic relationship with animals, she created a new genre in animal photography: the expression and personality in animals.
Ylla: The Birth of Modern Animal Photography recounts the eventful odyssey of a "New Woman" par excellence, fearless and knowing no limits. She was part of artists' circles in Belgrade and Paris, however during WWII she fled to New York via Marseille where she started her career again from square one. Originally taking beguiling photos in her studio and zoos, Ylla finally traveled to Africa and India where she died in a tragic accident during a water buffalo race. Her Animals in Africa and Animals in India are some of the first books on the subject. Ylla also introduced photography to children's literature. Her books The Sleepy Little Lion and Two Little Bears are juvenile classics. This book details her remarkable life and work.

Georgia O'Keeffe - My New Yorks
A revelatory study of Georgia O’Keeffe’s New York paintings of the late 1920s and their deep significance within the artist’s development
In 1924 Georgia O’Keeffe (1887–1986) first moved to the Shelton Hotel in New York with her husband, the photographer and art dealer Alfred Stieglitz. The Shelton was Manhattan’s earliest residential skyscraper, and its dizzying heights inspired O’Keeffe to create a powerful series of approximately twenty-five paintings and numerous drawings over a span of about five years. She called these “my New Yorks,” and they overwhelmingly consist of two types of compositions: sprawling observations looking down onto the city and humbling views directed up at the newly built urban monoliths. Exploring the New York skyline, O’Keeffe resisted the approach of contemporaries such as Charles Sheeler and Paul Strand—who celebrated New York as a streamlined, impersonal series of geometric canyons—and instead portrayed it as an amalgamation of the organic and the inorganic, the natural and the constructed. Only in this way could she express New York (in her words) “as it is felt.”
Reshaping our understanding of this pivotal yet underappreciated period in O’Keeffe’s storied career, this publication situates the New York paintings within the artist’s larger oeuvre and examines how these works reflect narratives of built environments, racialized space, and the politics of place.
