Významný básnik maďarskej moderny Gyula Juhász (1883 – 1937) bol gymnaziálny profesor maďarčiny a latinčiny. Jeho tretie profesorské pôsobisko bolo štátne maďarské vyššie gymnázium v Skalici (1911 – 1913). Do bývalého slobodného kráľovského mesta pricestoval s pocitom opätovného vyhnanca na končiny Uhorska. Postupne si však osvojil nezvyčajnú spoločenskú a kultúrnu atmosféru Skalice a Skaličanov. Dokumentuje to nielen 108 básní, ktoré napísal v Skalici, ale aj prozaické a publicistické texty. Pre básnika a literáta s labilnou psychikou sú to nezvratné symbolické návraty a pre maďarsko-slovenské literárne a kultúrne vzťahy nesporné hodnoty z obdobia tesne pred zánikom a po zániku Uhorska.

The Collected Poems of J. R. R. Tolkien

J.R.R. Tolkien aspired to be a poet in the first instance, and poetry was part of his creative life no less than his prose, his languages, and his art. Although Tolkien’s readers are aware that he wrote poetry, if only from verses in The Hobbit and The Lord of the Rings, its extent is not well known, and its qualities are underappreciated. Within his larger works of fiction, poems help to establish character and place as well as further the story; as individual works, they delight with words and rhyme. They express his love of nature and the seasons, of landscape and music, and of words. They convey his humour and his sense of wonder.
The earliest work in this collection, written for his beloved, is dated to 1910, when Tolkien was eighteen. More poems would follow during his years at Oxford, some of them very elaborate and eccentric. Those he composed during the First World War, in which he served in France, tend to be concerned not with trenches and battle, but with life, loss, faith, and friendship, his longing for England, and the wife he left behind. Beginning in 1914, elements of his legendarium, ‘The Silmarillion’, began to appear, and the ‘Matter of Middle-earth’ would inspire much of Tolkien’s verse for the rest of his life.

Mám klepátko od nehlídaných zahrad
Rozsáhlý výbor z poezie jednoho ze zásadních polských básníků Zbigniewa Herberta připravil a přeložil Josef Mlejnek. Herbertova nezaměnitelná poetika, opřená o klasické vzdělání i výtvarnou citlivost, je dnes už dědictvím 20. století, stále však inspiruje svým nesmlouvavým postojem, nedůvěrou k myriádám obrazů nebo zacházením s emblematickou maskou-postavou pana Cogito.V českých překladech se básnické dílo Zbigniewa Herberta objevilo poprvé už na konci padesátých let především díky Vlastě Dvořáčkové, básníku Miroslavu Holubovi, který se s Herbertem osobně znal, nebo Miroslavu Červenkovi. Naopak eseje se dočkaly vydání až mnohem později. Nový výbor je také osobním pohledem Josefa Mlejnka na Herbertovo dílo – některé básně již česky vyšly a nyní jsou publikovány v novém překladu.
Zbigniew Herbert (1924–1998) byl významný polský básník a esejista, stal se symbolem protikomunistického odporu v Polsku a byl několikrát nominovaný na Nobelovu cenu. Svou první básnickou knihu Struna světla vydal v roce 1956, v roce 1974 vychází jeho kniha Pan Cogito, jejíž hlavní stejnojmenná postava se pak objevuje i v následujících Herbertových knihách. Poslední sbírka Epilog bouře byla vydána v roce jeho úmrtí. Je také autorem knižních reportážních esejů Barbar v zahradě (1962), na které navázaly soubory Zátiší s udidlem (1993) a Labyrint u moře (2000), v nichž reflektuje své časté cesty do zahraničí, kde pobýval řadu měsíců, někdy i let. Ačkoli v exilu nikdy natrvalo nezůstal, pobyt mimo Polsko pomáhal Herbertovi vyrovnat se s komunistickou totalitou, a zároveň promýšlet vztah k evropskému kulturnímu dědictví a tradici.

Babits Mihályra már kortársai is nagy irodalmi vezéregyéniségként tekintettek. Költészete merőben más, mint nagy pályatársaié. Lírájában kiemelt hangsúlyt kap az objektivitás és a bölcselet. Úgy tudott újító és kísérletező lenni, hogy közben nem engedte el a klasszikus irodalmi hagyományt sem. "Nyugtalan klasszicistaként" jellemezték őt.
