V souboru studií nazvaném Lidová výtvarná kultura se autor pokouší naznačit možnosti hledání odlišných cest při studiu rozmanitých otázek o obsahu a rozsahu národopisného i mezioborového bádání všech relevantních kategorií výtvarného umění a dalších estetických aktivit lidových vrstev. Vychází při tom nezřídka z úvah terminologických, které by měly přispívat k nalézání společného odborného jazyka a usnadňovat tak dorozumívání mezi odbornými i ostatními interesenty.

Americké avantgardní divadlo
Kniha Arnolda Aronsona, profesora divadelních studií Columbia University v New Yorku, systematicky, kvalifikovaně a přitom velmi čtivě mapuje vývoj amerického alternativního divadla. Vrací se k jeho kořenům, výstižně charakterizuje široký kulturní, společenský i umělecký kontext jeho vzniku a zejména poučenými a kritickými analýzami seznamuje čtenáře s jeho nejvýznamnějšími osobnostmi, soubory a inscenacemi.
Aronson sleduje jak vnější podmínky rozvoje americké divadelní avantgardy, tak vlivy zakotvené uvnitř uměleckého vývoje, jako byly myšlenky a umělecké postupy Marcela Duchampa, Gertrude Steinové, Antonína Artauda či Johna Cage. Postupné zakořeňování těchto postupů sleduje autor na příkladě experimentů v Black Mountain College, happeningů (například Alana Kaprowa), či v díle Living Theatre. Aronson dále připomíná kolektivní duch 60. let, vznik a existenci Open Theatre, vznik rituálního divadla a postupného jeho přerodu do divadla performancí, jako je Schechnerova Performance Group, nebo Serbanovy divadelní experimenty v LaMaMa. Kniha zachycuje, jak se v 70. a 80. letech avantgardní hnutí dále štěpí, performance se individualizuje, od rituálu se na jedné straně vrací k estetizaci jako v dílech Roberta Wilsona, Richarda Foremana a Wooster Group, a dále k extrémním projevům tzv. "body art" na pomezí masochismu a sebepoškozování, i individuálním performancím zakotveným v autobiografické sféře performera (Spaulding Grey, Laurie Anderson).
