Groundhog Day
Groundhog Day (1993), directed by Harold Ramis and starring Bill Murray, is widely regarded as one of the most original and enduring films of 1990s Hollywood. What begins as a high-concept romantic comedy about a cynical television weatherman forced to repeatedly relive the same day soon deepens into a tale of despair and renewal, coloured by existential unease and the spirit of Samuel Beckett. In this engaging study, Ryan Gilbey traces the film’s unlikely journey from Danny Rubin’s speculative script, centred on a man condemned to eternity in a small town, to its transformation into a studio classic. Drawing on fresh interviews with Rubin, Gilbey explores the inspired casting of Murray and Andie MacDowell, the film’s quietly radical structure, and the delicate balance between comedy and melancholy that gives Groundhog Day its lasting power. This new edition includes an afterword in which Gilbey reflects on the film’s continuing cultural impact, its themes of repetition and despair assuming fresh resonance in the wake of the Covid-19 pandemic with its cycle of lockdown and re-opening. He considers Groundhog Day’s influence on movies and television from Source Code (2011) and Edge of Tomorrow (2014) to Russian Doll (2019–2022) and I May Destroy You (2020), as well as the 2016 stage musical based on the movie. Groundhog Day, Gilbey argues, has become more than a film; it is now a lens through which we examine repetition, transformation and the rhythms of contemporary life.

Jindra Viková (1946) patří dlouhá desetiletí ke špičkám naší i mezinárodní výtvarné scény, profiluje se jako keramička, sochařka, malířka, kurátorka i pedagožka. Její dílo sumarizuje hned několik monografií, perspektivou osobní výpovědi, vycházející z rozhovoru, poznámek a diářů, je však autorka v této publikaci představena poprvé. A má rozhodně co nabídnout. Její dílo bylo oceněno na významných přehlídkách se zaměřením na keramiku, např. na festivalech v italské Faenze (1981, 1984), na Trienále porcelánu ve švýcarském Nyonu, na Mezinárodním bienále keramického umění ve francouzském Vallauris (obě 1986), na International Art Festival v Bagdádu (1988) nebo na 1. světovém bienále keramiky v jihokorejském Icheonu (2001). Mezi lety 1991 až 2003 postupně vyučovala na University of Michigan, Ohio University a University of Connecticut. Díly je zastoupena v řade českých, evropských i mimoevropských muzeí a sbírek. Od roku 2002 vede dílny keramické tvorby v centru Jarmily Tyrnerové v Kohoutově. Se svým celoživotním partnerem, fotografem Pavlem Bankou, žije a pracuje v Benicích u Prahy.

Monografii Kateřina Vincourová vydala Galerie Rudolfinum ve své ediční řadě u příležitosti velké sólo výstavy této české umělkyně, kterou jí pod názvem Kateřina Vincourová Skin Care uspořádala od 2. 10. 2025 do 11. 1. 2026.
Publikace obsahuje text a rozsáhlý rozhovor s umělkyní od kurátorky výstavy Denisy Kujelové a eseje Martiny Pachmanové (UMPRUM), Víta Havránka (AVU) a britské historičky umění Klary Kemp-Welch. Graficky monografii navrhla fotografka a grafička Markéta Othová, instalačními fotografiemi opatřil Martin Polák. Publikace zachycuje nejen samotnou výstavu, ale obsáhle se zabývá tvorbou Kateřiny Vincourové od 90. let 20. století do současnosti včetně bohatého obrazového materiálu.

For over a century, filmmakers have been shooting documentaries in West and Central Africa, a region that included the colonies of French West and Equatorial Africa and now encompasses fourteen nations and nearly 200 million people. Documentary Objectives offers a rich history of these films, until now largely ignored by scholars. Author Rachel Gabara shows the crucial role they played in the development of both European and African cinemas, arguing that their recovery as a nonfiction tradition transforms our understanding of documentary itself. Gabara's book traces fifty years of French colonial documentary in sub-Saharan Africa – propaganda-infused travel, hunting, expedition, and ethnographic films. After independence, African directors reclaimed their cinematic image by challenging outsider claims to authenticity and developing new models for nonfiction. Gabara highlights the nearly forgotten innovations of early decades and analyzes recent works that have attracted a wider audience on the continent and internationally. In a complex network of images and languages and across a dynamic range of styles, African documentarists have remade a global art form rooted in oppression, exoticization, and a simplistic conception of filmic realism. By recounting a history of nonfiction film in which Europe and Africa were inextricably linked, Documentary Objectives brings together traditions that have been both marginalized and kept apart, charting new ground in the disciplines of Film Studies, African Studies, and French and Francophone Studies.

The first ever English translation of Bruno Munari's Design and Visual Communication (1968) fills a gap in Munari's output for the English-speaking world and provides a highly relevant guide to bridging architecture and design education and everyday life.
Published in 1968 after Munari was invited to the Carpenter Center at Harvard to teach, the book transforms over 50 lessons, class materials and letters addressed to the city of Milan, into a book on the future of art, architecture and design. Conceived as a living volume, the book is written to inspire current and future designers to push beyond past events, however recent, and develop new tools to see and understand tomorrow's world.
Accompanying the facsimile reproduction of the original volume are in-depth contextual annotations by Jeffrey Schnapp. As a Munari scholar and design historian, Schnapp has spent years unearthing the radical potential of critical historical material. His annotations and micro-interventions throughout the facsimile reprint seek to fulfill Munari's call for an evolution of the book in form and content and highlight how this work is as relevant today as when originally published.
