V průběhu 19. a 20. století stálo české umění opakovaně před otázkou, co vlastně znamená „skutečně lidové“ a jak s tímto pojmem tvůrčím způsobem pracovat. Předkládaná kniha podrobně sleduje proměny tohoto hledání od počátků národního obrození, kdy Herderovy myšlenky a tehdejší evropská literární praxe probudily zájem o lidovou slovesnost a inspirovaly vznik tzv. ohlasové literatury, až po dobu první republiky, během které architekti a výtvarníci usilující o vytvoření národního stylu dospěli k syntetickým formám v čele s „rondokubismem“ okruhu Pavla Janáka.
Autor krok za krokem odhaluje paralely mezi vývojem literatury a výtvarného umění – od kořenů ve sběratelském nadšení přes mechanickou formální nápodobu až po krizi a volání po historické i umělecké pravdivosti. Pozornost věnuje sporům o hranice „pravého“ folkloru, proměnám představ o tvůrčí autonomii lidových vrstev i napětí mezi romantickými vizemi národního ducha a kritickým pohledem inspirovaným hegelovskou filozofií.
