Enlightenment, Culture, Leisure: Houses of Culture in Czechoslovakia
The publication is the first book to provide a comprehensive account of the building of a nationwide network of cultural houses, which were systematically established during the socialist period in the former Czechoslovakia. As places of public life in post-war society, these buildings enjoyed generous state support, not only economically but also politically and legislatively. Our interest is not only focused on their specific typology, but we also look at their educational and emancipatory potential as well as their role as a political tool for the organization and control of leisure. The publication also focuses on the search for the roots and programmatic antecedents of cultural institutions established from the nineteenth century onwards and in the inter-war period (association and national or workers' houses), with an overlap into the post-1989 period, when buildings and their operators had to, and sometimes still have to, cope with the demands of modernisation. The book covers both the Czech and Slovak context of the construction of cultural houses, which not only manages to cover the entire territory of the former Czechoslovakia, but also to capture the different historical experiences. The texts for the book were written by Jiří Andrs, Jan Galeta, Hubert Guzik, Katarína Haberlandová, Michaela Janečková, Laura Krišteková, Josef Ledvina, Irena Lehkoživová, Henrieta Moravčíková, Peter Szalay, Karel Šima, Jitka Šosová, Lukáš Veverka, Jan Zikmund, with a foreword by the leading British cultural and art historian David Crowley. The book is a combination of a scholarly book and a pictorial publication with images by photographers Oskar Helcel and Martin Netočný. The series of photographs divides the text into four parts, the first of which focuses on historical pre-images of cultural houses in the Czech lands and Slovakia from the 19th century onwards, and the second on the practical aspects of their construction during the period of state socialism. The third traces the history and changes of cultural houses in the Czech lands from the Second World War to the 1990s. The fourth section focuses on the same in Slovak territory and also includes two case studies, one from Slovakia and the other from the Czech Republic. Interwar

Alex Webb: Dislocations
A contemporary reimagining of Alex Webb's long out-of-print, limited edition book Dislocations.
Recognised as a pioneer of colour photography, Alex Webb is able to juxtapose gesture, colour and contrasting cultural tensions into a single beguiling frame, resulting in evocative images that elevate fractured and multilayered meanings. His book Dislocations, first published in 1998 as a limited edition accordion book with Canon Laser prints (then considered state of the art), brings together pictures from the many disparate locations over Webb's oeuvre, meditating on the act of photography as a form of dislocation in itself.
Spurred by the pandemic, and its world of closed borders and disrupted travel, Webb reconsidered the impossibility of creating this series of images: the result is this reimagined edition of Dislocations, which includes new photographs taken in the twenty-five years since the original. Publikace představuje souhrn, analýzu a syntézu dat získaných výzkumem málo známého nástrojového druhu dané oblasti ČR. Alikvotní flétna je zde představena jako součást světového a karpatského instrumentáře, jsou vysvětleny její akustické a herní vlastnosti, archaické výrobní postupy a její možný dopad na hudební myšlení v daném areálu. Text dále pátrá po alikvotní flétně a odvozených nástrojích jakožto zmizelých artefaktech tradiční hudby na zkoumaném území a dotýká se i procesu obnovy soudobé výroby a hry. Z hlediska použitých metod využívá analýzu písemných, zvukových a obrazových dokladů, komparace, experimentální rekonstrukce, empirické vyhodnocení nástrojů v soukromých i muzejních sbírkách a rozhovory s informátory. Většina z předložených dat je publikována v tomto rozsahu poprvé.

M. Nagy Szilvia 1976-ban született Győrben. Grafikusi tanulmányainak befejezése óta önálló munkákkal foglalkozik. Tíz gyermekkönyvet,valamint Jorge Luis Borges Képzelt lények könyve című művét illusztrálta; képeit és tudományos pontossággal készített állatszobrait eddig több mint húsz önálló kiállításon mutatta be. Férjével és rókáival Budapesten él.
Szigeti Kovács Viktor 1978-ban született Győrben. A Szegedi Tudományegyetemen 2003-ban szerzett magyar-komparatisztika szakos diplomát. Kortárs magyar irodalommal kapcsolatos kritikái, tanulmányai folyóiratokban (Bárka, Múhely, Forrás stb.) és tanulmánykötetekben jelentek meg. Első regénye az Először volt az erdő 2015-ben látott napvilágot, amit további három követett: Lúna gyermekei, A táltos, A táltos - Karakondzul éjszakája. Az ég madarai című bestiáriumát 2018-ban adta ki a Corvina Kiadó.
Rene Magritte
The first book-length material study of the works of Belgian Surrealist René Magritte.
René Magritte (1898–1967) is the most famous Belgian artist of the twentieth century and a celebrated representative of the Surrealist movement. Much has been written about his practices, artistic community, and significance within the history of modernism, but little has been documented regarding his process.
This volume examines fifty oil paintings made by Magritte between 1921 and 1967, now held at the Royal Museums of Fine Arts of Belgium. This technical study of his works using noninvasive scientific imaging and chemical analysis reveals the artist’s painting materials, his habit of overpainting previous compositions, and the origins and mechanisms of surface and pigment degradation. Of interest to conservators, scientists, curators, and enthusiasts of twentieth-century art, this book expands our understanding of Magritte the artist and provides new and useful findings that will inform strategies for the future care of his works.

Még a Színművészeti Egyetem elsőéves dokumentumfilm-rendező hallgatója voltam, amikor az egyik tanárunk behozott az órára egy vadonatúj, frissen készült filmet. Azt mondta, nézzük meg, aztán beszélgessünk róla. Ez volt a Sose halunk meg, Koltai Róbert első rendezése. Egyetlen gondolat motoszkált akkor bennem, aminek aztán parázs vitát provokálva hangot is adtam az egyetemen: ennek a filmnek minden kockájából árad a szeretet. A filmet is, bennünket is megérlelt azóta az idő. Nem sejthettem, hogy pontosan 30 év múlva olyan könyvön fogok dolgozni, amely Koltai Róbert filmjeivel foglalkozik, és őt nem csak mint filmrendezőt, filmszínészt, hanem mint életem párját is kérdezem majd. A szubjektív kifejezés ily módon talán adja magát, a monográfiát pedig az magyarázza, hogy a könyv Koltai Róbert mintegy 15 filmjét és az elmúlt közel 30 évet öleli át. Curiously, its primary purpose is functional rather than aesthetic: butts balance our bodies while running, according to biologists. But ask any pygophiliac—as fundament fans are clinically termed—and you’ll get the same answer: female hindquarters exist to please the eye, the hands, and parts south.
