From a small, picturesque farmhouse in the rich fields and meadows of Normandy, David Hockney followed the changing seasons across 2020 and into the new year. He used his iPad to spontaneously depict impressions of the landscape surrounding him, catching the first spring blossoms, the smell of summer, the saturated colors of autumn, and the stark shapes of dark branches in winter time. Conquest of the Useless

Conquest of the Useless is the diary Herzog kept during the making of Fitzcarraldo, compiled from June 1979 to November 1981. Emerging as if out of an Amazonian fever dream during filming, Herzog's writings are an extraordinary documentary unto themselves. Strange and otherworldly events are recounted by the filmmaker. The crew's camp in the heart of the jungle is attacked and burned to the ground; the production of the film clashes with a border war; and, of course, Herzog unravels the impossible logistics of moving a 320-ton steamship over a hill without the use of special effects.
In his preface, Herzog warns that the diary entries collected in Conquest of the Useless do not represent "reports on the actual filming" but rather "inner landscapes, born of the delirium of the jungle." Thus begins an extraordinary glimpse into the mind of a genius during the making of one of his greatest achievements.

Men, War and Film
The Calling Blighty series of films produced by the Combined Kinematograph Service produced towards the end of the Second World War were one-reel films in which soldiers gave short spoken messages to the camera as a means of connecting the front line and the home front. These are the first ever films where men speak openly in their regional accents, and they have profound meaning for remembrance, documentary representation and the ecology of film in wartime. Of the 400 films (or ‘issues’) made, 64 survive. Each of those contained around 25 individual messages. Men – and a very few women - from a particular city, town or region were grouped together for the films to make regional screenings back in UK cinemas and town halls possible. Personnel from all three services are featured, but the men are predominantly from the army units. Screenings took place at a cinema in the subjects’ local area and were usually organised by the regional Army Welfare Committee. The names and addresses of those to be invited to the screenings were sent to the UK along with the films. Until now, these films have barely been researched, and yet are a valuable source of social history as well as representing a different mode from the mainstream of British wartime documentary. This book expands the history of Calling Blighty and places it in a broader context, both past and present. New research reveals the origins of the film series and draws comparisons with written and oral contemporary sources. Steve Hawley is an artist/filmmaker whose work has been screened worldwide, and has collaborated closely with the North West Film Archive UK. He is emeritus professor at the Manchester Metropolitan University UK. Using memoirs and diaries, Steve Hawley has researched the roles in the Burma campaign of participants in the surviving films, and traced over 160 of the families of the men – and two men still alive – and recreated these wartime screenings. Hawley’s book is part description of the films, part reclamation of a largely unknown genre of wartime filmmaking, partly an account of the Burma campaign, and partly a discussion of war and memory. Engagingly and warmly written. It will be of interest to scholars and researchers in the areas of war studies, especially those specializing in the social rather than military history of warfare, and historians of British wartime cinema and documentary. Also useful for an undergraduate audience, in history, media/film studies. Potential for readers with an interest in the Second World War, particularly the war in Burma, and those with an interest in family history of the period.

Die Karlsbrücke verbindet die beiden Ufer der Moldau schon seit dem Jahr 1357 und ist mittlerweile ein untrennbarer Teil des beeindruckenden Prager Panoramas. Den Grundstein legte Kaiser Karl IV. persönlich – und obwohl sie oft schweren Widrigkeiten ausgesetzt war, steht sie bis heute. Nach und nach wurde sie durch eine Reihe von Skulpturen ergänzt. Mit Ausnahme der Bronzestatue des hl. Johannes Nepomuk sind alle übrigen 29 Statuen und Figurengruppen bedeutender Heiliger aus Stein gemeißelt. Dank ihnen ist die älteste erhaltene Steinbrücke ein Unikat, das es so auf der Welt kein zweites Mal gibt. Gerade deshalb sollte sie bei einem Besuch in Prag auf keinen Fall übersehen werden.
Puente de Carlos: Leyendas e historias
El Puente de Carlos une ambas orillas del Moldava ya desde el ano 1357 siendo una parte inseparable del impresionante panorama praguense. La piedra angular fue colocada por el emperador Carlos IV, y aunque el puente ha sido expuesto muchas veces a las adversidades del destino, sigue existiendo hasta el día de hoy. Sucesivamente se han instalado ahí varias esculturas. Excepto la estatua de bronce de San Juan Nepomuceno, las demás 29 obras de importantes santos son de piedra. Gracias a ellas el puente praguense más antiguo se convirtió en una construcción única y sin par a nivel mundial y no debería perdérselo ningún visitante de Praga.
