What does it mean?
Is it really art?
Why does it cost so much?
While these questions are perpetually asked about contemporary art, they are not the questions that E. H. Gombrich set out to answer in his seminal book The Story of Art. Contemporary art is very different from what came before. From the 1960s, where Gombrich’s account concludes, artists began to abandon traditional forms of art and started to make work that questioned art’s very definition. This is where Godfrey picks up the story.
Developments in contemporary art have followed no straightforward line of progress or sequence of movements. Us and Them: The Authorised Story of Hipgnosis
Between the late '60s and early '80s, design house Hipgnosis created some of the most iconic and ubiquitous album artwork of all time. Their original lifespan coincided with the golden age of the 12-inch LP, beginning just as the Beatles' Sgt Pepper made the record sleeve the ultimate blank canvas and ending just as new technology looked set to usurp vinyl.

Slavatovský palác
Kniha, na jejíž přípravě se podíleli Martin Mádl, Radka Heisslerová, Tadeáš Kadlec, Sylva Dobalová a Petra Zelenková, pojednává o projektech hraběte Jana Jáchyma Slavaty z Chlumu a Košumberka (1635–1689). Tento český šlechtic se v roce 1673 stal majorátním pánem a vladařem hradeckého domu a začal také zastávat významné zemské úřady. Změna jeho společenského postavení se odrazila v různých stavebních projektech. Autoři knihy se v prvních kapitolách věnují barokní úpravě malostranského domu pánů z Hradce (dnes součást Velvyslanectví Italské republiky) a jeho vnitřní výzdobě. Na základě archivních materiálů sleduje průběh stavebních a uměleckých prací v paláci, prováděných mezi léty 1673–1689. V knize je rekonstruována i dispozice reprezentačních a soukromých prostor slavatovské rezidence. Interpretovány tu jsou také stavební a umělecké prvky, které se v torzální podobě dochovaly zejména v reprezentačním apartmánu. Dalším mapovaným pražským projektem je bývalá Slavatovská zahrada na Smíchově, z níž se dochovalo několik architektonických a sochařských elementů. Zvláštní pozornost je v knize věnována úpravě věže malostranského paláce a dochované bráně Slavatovské zahrady, jejichž členění představuje pozoruhodné předstupně středoevropského dynamického baroka. Za Jana Jáchyma Slavaty došlo také k úpravě jihočeského zámku Červená Lhota. Kapitola, která je věnovaná tomuto zámku, se zabývá zejména zčásti dochovaným hlavním sálem a jeho štukovou a nedávno odkrytou malířskou výzdobou. Kniha dále nabízí kontextuální studie, které pojednávají o slavatovských grafikách, a o umělcích, kteří pracovali pro Jana Jáchyma Slavatu. Obsahuje také exkurz věnovaný svatbě Marie Josefy Slavatové a Heřmana Jakuba Černína a svatební hostině, která se odehrála v nově upraveném paláci na začátku roku 1687. V samostatné kapitole jsou shrnuty také stavební proměny Slavatovského paláce v průběhu 18. a 19. století. Na závěr je zařazena edice relevantních písemných pramenů. Dune: Exposures

Kopasz v projektu Dočasné předměty / Temporary Objects navazuje na své dřívější experimenty s formami osobních deníkových záznamů. Pracuje konceptuálně s jedním výchozím objektem, který analyzuje a dekonstruuje prostřednictvím nejrůznějších fotografických i dalších výtvarných technik.
Na listech papíru sedmi sešitů či modulů autorské knihy sleduje vizuální a významové analogie a obrazy ukládá do vztahových konstelací. Místy přidává stručné textové komentáře. Bezprostředně zahlédnuté interakce podrobuje opakovaným rozvahám nad rolí konkrétního a abstrahovaného, celku a detailu, nad mírou osobních referencí a sdílené zkušenosti. Teprve pak je usadí do systému, který má překračovat řád posloupnosti a kauzality. V každém sešitě tak narážíme nejen na vzájemně provázané sekvence, ale rovněž na nečekané střihy a zvraty.
The book-object, consisting of seven separate parts, connects the photographic medium with the phenomenon of the author's book and plays with non-linear content and ways of reading. Kopasz's project Dočasné předměty / Temporary Objects builds on his earlier experiments with forms of personal diary entries. He works conceptually with one initial object, which he analyses and deconstructs through various photographic and other artistic techniques.
He traces visual and semantic analogies on the sheets of paper of the seven notebooks or modules of the artist's book, placing the images in relational constellations. In places he adds brief textual commentaries. He subjects immediately glimpsed interactions to repeated reflections on the role of the concrete and the abstract, the whole and the detail, and the degree of personal reference and shared experience. Only then does he settle them into a system that is meant to transcend the order of sequence and causality. Thus, in each workbook we encounter not only interrelated sequences, but also unexpected cuts and twists.
